In passato si è parlato molto riguardo all'intenzione di Google di entrare nel mondo della telefonia con un cellulare col proprio marchio.

In realtà Google avrebbe mire più ambiziose: diventare un operatore telfonico. Negli USA, ultimamente si è molto parlato dell'apertura della banda dei 700 Mhz da destinare ala telefonia; le aste dovrebbero tenersi nei mesi dell'anno venturo.

Google sarebbe intenzionato a presentare un' offerta se i criteri di assegnazione della banda terranno conto di 4 regole: 

• Open applications: Consumers should be able to download and utilize any software applications, content, or services they desire;
• Open devices: Consumers should be able to utilize a handheld communications device with whatever wireless network they prefer;
• Open services: Third parties (resellers) should be able to acquire wireless services from a 700 MHz licensee on a wholesale basis, based on reasonably nondiscriminatory commercial terms;
• Open networks: Third parties (like internet service providers) should be able to interconnect at any technically feasible point in a 700 MHz licensee's wireless network.
